Before You Reschedule

Rescheduling a biometrics appointment should be a last resort. Understanding the implications and preparing properly will help you avoid unnecessary delays in your case.

Think Carefully Before Rescheduling

You should make every effort to attend your biometrics appointment as originally scheduled. Rescheduling your appointment will take time and will likely delay the processing of your application.

Why This Matters

Your biometrics appointment is a critical step in the immigration process. Delays in completing biometrics can push back your entire case timeline, including work authorization and travel document approvals.

However, if you truly cannot make it to your scheduled appointment, USCIS provides an online tool that allows you to reschedule quickly and conveniently.

How to Reschedule Online

USCIS offers a straightforward online process for rescheduling your biometrics appointment. Follow these steps carefully to ensure your request is submitted correctly.

Step-by-Step Rescheduling Process

Step 1: Log Into Your USCIS Account

Go to my.uscis.gov to create a personal USCIS account, or log into your existing account at myaccount.uscis.gov.

Step 2: Select "Reschedule Biometrics"

Choose the "Reschedule biometrics" menu option at the top of the page.

Step 3: Click "Reschedule Appointment"

Click the blue "Reschedule appointment" button at the bottom of the page.

Step 4: Select a Reason for Rescheduling

Choose a reason from the drop-down menu, or select "Other" to manually enter a different reason.

Step 5: Enter Your Appointment Information

Provide the requested details from your Biometrics Appointment Notice, including your Receipt Number or A-Number, current appointment date and time, date of birth, and the location of the Application Support Center.

Step 6: Select an Application Support Center Location

Choose the Application Support Center where you would like to attend your new appointment.

Step 7: Choose a New Date and Time

Select a new biometrics appointment date and time from the available options.

Step 8: Print Your New Appointment Notice

Print the new Appointment Notice directly from your online account. Bring it with you to your new appointment along with the original Appointment Notice.

Step 9: Notify Serotte Law

Forward a copy of the new Appointment Notice to your Case Manager at Serotte Law.

What You'll Need

  • Your USCIS online account credentials (or create a new account at my.uscis.gov)
  • Your Biometrics Appointment Notice with Receipt Number or A-Number
  • Your current appointment date, time, and Application Support Center location
  • Your date of birth
03

Accepted Reasons for Rescheduling

USCIS will approve rescheduling requests that are submitted on time and supported by "good cause." Here is what qualifies as a sufficient reason.

What Qualifies as "Good Cause"

USCIS will grant timely requests for rescheduling if there is "good cause," meaning you have a sufficient reason for not being able to attend your scheduled appointment. Sufficient reasons may include, but are not limited to:

  • Illness, medical appointment, or hospitalization
  • Previously planned travel
  • Significant life events (e.g., wedding, funeral, graduation ceremony)
  • Inability to obtain transportation to the appointment location
  • Inability to obtain leave from employment or caregiver responsibilities
  • Late-delivered or undelivered biometric services appointment notice

Important Rules and Limitations

There are critical deadlines and restrictions on the online rescheduling tool. Make sure you understand these rules before submitting your request.

Online Rescheduling Deadlines

12-Hour Deadline

Online requests to reschedule must be made at least 12 hours before your scheduled appointment time. If your appointment is less than 12 hours away, you will not be able to use the online tool.

When You Cannot Use the Online Tool

The online rescheduling tool cannot be used in the following situations:

  • Your appointment has already been rescheduled two or more times
  • Your appointment is within 12 hours
  • Your appointment has already passed

In any of these cases, you must call the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833) to reschedule your appointment. Be aware that you will need to wait for a USCIS scheduler to call you back with a new date and time, which may take multiple weeks.

Multiple Appointments

If you need to reschedule more than one appointment — for example, for family members who applied with you — you must submit a separate reschedule request for each applicant. Each person's appointment must be rescheduled individually through the online tool.

Key Reminders

  • Reschedule at least 12 hours before your appointment time
  • After two online reschedules, you must call USCIS directly
  • Submit separate requests for each family member
  • Always forward your new Appointment Notice to your Serotte Law Case Manager
